The Role of “Puppy Puppy Puppy” Recall

We imprint all of our puppies to the recall of “puppy puppy puppy” during feeding and other times during the day. The litter collectively comes to this call at any time as they have heard it during all of their time with us. They know it means snuggles, food, or something fun! Puppy Culture calls this a lifesaving tool. Here is what you can do to ensure your puppy continues to have this vital recall.

 1. Practice 1-2x a week with a high value treat they don’t get often. Wait for them to be distracted by something (focus is not on you) and then call, “Puppy puppy puppy!” As soon as your pup gets to you, make a big, happy deal of it and give them the treat. That is it! We recommend doing this for the rest of your dog’s life.

2. Do not ever use “puppy puppy puppy” as a punishment (to put them in their kennel, call them from inside, etc.). It has to be 100% positive.

3. Your dog will learn very quickly to ignore you if this command is overused - twice a week and no more unless needed.

4. When can you use this command? If your dog bolts out of the door, is in a dangerous situation or won’t recall when off leash. If your puppy is familiar with the command, they will come running back to you! We have had many past families in this exact situation, and their puppy came running back!

5. Step it up and practice this command with a long leash and take them out in a high distraction area. When they are not focused on you, call the “puppy puppy puppy”. If they don’t come? Reel them in and keep calling them. Remember to only be positive and happy. Give lots of praise and a treat.
