Front Porch Golden’s Rule of 7s.
In addition to our Puppy Culture curriculum and ENS protocols, we use the Rule of 7s to help prepare our puppies to be well adjusted, smart, and confident.
The Rule of 7s is a socialization framework created by Dr. Margaret Hastings to build confidence in puppies before they reach 7 weeks of age (though families often extend it through 12–16 weeks).
The goal is gentle, positive exposure to prevent fear of novel environments, textures, and sounds. By 7 weeks old, a puppy should have experienced:
7 Different Surfaces: Walking on grass, carpet, wood, concrete, tile, linoleum, and gravel/dirt (or grates/tarp).
7 Different Toy Types: Playing with plush toys, hard rubber (Kongs), squeaky toys, ropes, wooden sticks, paper boxes, and metal/lattice balls.
7 Different Environments: Exploring the kitchen, yard, basement, garage, bathroom, crate, and car.
7 Types of Objects/Obstacles: Encounters with steps, low ramps, open doors, tunnels, mirrors, umbrella/cardboard boxes, and low hurdles.
7 Different Container Types: Eating/drinking from stainless steel, ceramic, plastic, snuffle mats, slow feeders, cardboard, or baking pans.
7 Different People: Interacting with men, women, children, people with glasses, people wearing hats/boots, elderly individuals, and people carrying bulky items.
7 Loud or Novel Noises: Hearing vacuums, doorbells, lawnmowers, thunder sounds, clapping/cheering, pots clanging, and running water.
